Black Maternal Health Week 2023

Birthwork is a beautiful space. It’s humbling and an honor to be a part of such a sacred event. This little one came 4 weeks ‘early’, in perfect health, strong,  and opinionated! Baby and Momma did beautifully. As did their birth team. 🤍 I’m grateful to this family for allowing me to share a part of their birth story as a positive highlight during Black Maternal Health Week 2023.

This little one had the most curious expression!

This now Mom of 4 is in excellent health with a positive birth story thanks to the support of her birth team and the nurses at the women’s center. 🎉

Momma & baby. She’s got 3 girls and now a healthy baby boy!

Black Maternal Health Week

April 11th-April 17th is Black Maternal Health Week. The purpose of this week is to raise awareness and direct attention to Black maternal health so that more Black women have positive birth experiences like this one.

We can collectively advocate to improve care and support for Black women during pregnancy and childbirth.

As of April 2023, Black women are still 3x more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. (CDC)

Let’s help create better health outcomes and reduce severely disproportionate maternal mortality rates for pregnant Black women.

Although today marks the end of the week designed to bring awareness to these issues, education and advocacy doesn’t need to stop here. To be sure, it isn’t limited to just one week. We can still create a larger community of folks wanting to make a difference.

Learn more about how you can help by educating yourself or visit the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA) to donate and/or for more information.
